Altep, Inc., a leader in litigation support, has expanded its services to include Magnetic Media Discovery Technology – an innovation that transcends traditional methods of discovery by doing away with the need to restore archived files before they can be accessed.  When dealing with archived data, restoration is generally the most costly and time-consuming step; however, with the advance of this technology, backup tape data can now be made readily accessible without up-front restoration, even if the organization does not own the source environment or backup software.

Altep's new Magnetic Media discovery service offers a significant savings in time and money – whereas traditional methods required restoration of the entire tape contents, indexing the data, and then commencing the search process, the new technology allows technicians to catalog and index the data directly on the magnetic media; perform Boolean, phrase, fuzzy and proximity searches; and restore only the relevant files and e-mail.  Backup media is indexed at the speed of the tape drive, and the technology is capable of managing unordered media, automatically sorting and cataloging unmarked and out-of-order archives. Most importantly, the discovery process can never result in data spoliation, because data is indexed directly from the magnetic media, which is never modified. All file system metadata, such as access and modified dates/times, are kept intact.

"This technology has changed both the limitations and the liabilities posed by an organization’s archived tapes,” said Willem van den Berge, Altep’s VP of Technology Services.  “The courts are increasingly aware of the evolving capabilities in discovery; more and more often, the argument of undue burden is falling on deaf ears.  Firms need to be agile and aggressive in their approach to archived data."

With more than fifteen years’ experience in litigation support and e-discovery, Altep’s experts can show you how to implement a magnetic media discovery strategy, and help you stay ahead of the litigation preparedness curve.
