Energy Automation Systems, Inc. (EASI) has provided the project design and technologies used by Stryker Corporation’s medical equipment manufacturing facility in Arroyo, Puerto Rico. The electrical system analysis and installation of the EASI technologies were facilitated by Caribbean Energy Savings, Inc. of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Stryker Corp. has cut monthly energy use by 18 percent with the installation of these energy saving technologies by Energy Automation Systems, Inc. The facility’s monthly usage was reduced from 1,436,000 to 1,177,000 kilowatt hours. Kilowatt Demand was reduced by a similar amount, and all Power Factor penalties were eliminated.

One of the largest companies servicing global orthopedic equipment needs, Stryker Corp. reports nearly seven billion dollars in annual sales, and is a significant presence in other medical specialties. “Our energy reduction goals were surpassed,” said Francis Pagan, the Stryker plan’s facilities manager. “This is especially remarkable as energy costs increased during that same period.” Pagan went on to say that “installation [of the Energy Automation Systems technology] was completed with no interruption during our around-the-clock manufacturing process. Our environmental goals were also met, meaning we significantly reduced our carbon footprint. We have experienced the utmost satisfaction with this process.”

Energy Automation Systems estimated that the Stryker facility would save nine percent on energy use, but when completed, the installation actually realized an 18 percent reduction. The Energy Automation Systems project included retrofitting the manufacturing and warehousing lighting to increase light levels as well as the quality of light. Energy Automation Systems’
Easiliner and Powerliner technologies were implemented extensively in both the manufacturing and air conditioning equipment. Additional savings on air conditioning and refrigeration were achieved with the Energy Automation Systems’ Optimizer intelligent controller and Energy Automation Systems’ polarized refrigerant oil additive.

It is important to note that Energy Automation Systems takes a philosophical approach to their energy conservation technologies. The reduction of existing waste is accomplished by improving both electrical system efficiency and the efficiency of the loads they treat, thus decreasing excess heat and improving power quality.

According to Joseph Merlo, the founder of Energy Automation Systems and its chief executive officer, saving twice as much as was originally estimated is a significant cost-saver for the Stryker Corporation’s Arroyo operation. Joseph Merlo noted, “Our affiliate, Caribbean Energy Savings, conducted an energy evaluation of the facility and projected a nine percent savings. Nearly doubling that savings speaks to the efficiency of Energy Automation Systems technologies – and the significance of this savings is relevant to any business that uses electricity.” Energy Automation Systems technologies have a life cycle of 20-30 years and require no maintenance, Joseph Merlo added.

If the actual savings had been below the estimate, the difference would have been covered by Energy Automation Systems through an arrangement with Lloyds of London. Energy Automation Systems, Inc. is based in Nashville, Tennessee and has provided energy savings solutions for companies in the U.S. and around the globe for more than 30 years.
