Denver, CO, and Seattle, WA - Like any true mystery, Web of Deceit, Darlene Cox’s newest thriller, published by Outskirts Press, abounds in twists of plot and surprising turns of fate. The suspenseful road to this novel’s unforeseen and surprising conclusion is paved with greed, jealousy, ambition, vengeance, corruption—and deceit, of course—just as any riveting mystery should be.

Web of Deceit is the story of Peter Brock, a man who has it all—or appears to. He is young, handsome, intelligent, and the founding partner of one of New York’s prestigious law firms. But, Peter has one remaining goal he wishes to fulfill. It is when he meets James Campbell, a wealthy New York diamond broker, who wishes to protect his hard-earned money from the IRS, that Peter sees his opportunity, and begins to weave a web of deceit to divert the bulk of Campbell’s fortune to his own accounts. If he should discover the deceit, how can Campbell, as a co-conspirator, cry “foul” at the risk of incarceration in a federal prison?

A perfect plan, Peter thinks. But he needs help to carry it out. He enlists Delilah, a strip club dancer, to learn through pillow talk the extent of Campbell’s wealth.  And there is Jenny, a trans-oceanic flight attendant with a major airline, to smuggle loose diamonds to Europe.

However, things suddenly get more complicated than Peter ever envisioned when all these little spiders start greedily weaving their own agendas onto his web. When two dead bodies are added to the mix, Peter’s law partner, Jack Morrison, says “enough,” and Peter finds himself trapped and entangled in the web he had thought only he himself had controlled.

“Let the Stephen Kings and Jeffrey Deavers leave blood on every page,” author Darlene Cox says.  She concentrates instead on the suspense created by the strategies and plots of the novel’s characters as they position themselves against each other, influenced by their own corrupt goals and the baggage each brings with them.

Darlene Cox’s first novel, A Little Bit of Larceny, was called “a classic caper” by author Kathleen Kettner and “a bang-up…mystery” by the Midwest Book Review.  Web of Deceit follows from the same classic and suspense-filled mold.
