The Vikings reportedly showed some initial interest in Jay Cutler when he was with the Denver Broncos. But they backed off and didn't pursue him, a decision that drew heavy criticism at the time, especially after he was traded to rival Chicago.
In retrospect, it appears to have been a wise move for the Vikings, at least in the short term. The Vikings are off to a 9-1 start, their best since 1998, and the 4-6 Bears have lost five of their past six games.
Cutler was trumpeted as the best Bears quarterback since Sid Luckman during the 1940s. But Cutler's statistics this season have resembled the scores of mediocre quarterbacks the franchise has fielded since the Luckman era.
Cutler leads the NFL with 18 interceptions, and the Bears' past two games (losses to Philadelphia and San Francisco) each were doomed by a pick on the attempted game-winning drive.
For the Vikings, the addition of Brett Favre is working out better than anyone could have imagined. Favre wouldn't have landed in Minnesota if the Vikings had acquired Cutler. The 40-year-old leads the NFL with a 112.1 passer rating and is making a case for his fourth MVP award.
