What happening?

For the running backs. Frank Gore and Maurice Jones-Drew are two of the best running backs in the league, and they have delivered the explosive plays on the ground that their offenses have been unable to achieve through the air. Gore has three touchdown runs of 60 or more yards this year, and his 42-yard scamper on Sunday made him the fifth player in 49ers franchise history to surpass 5,000 career rushing yards. Jones-Drew, meanwhile, has scored rushing touchdowns of 80 and 61 yards this season. The game also is a homecoming for the Jaguars running back. He grew up in Oakland.

While the 49ers' playoff hopes took a hit with Sunday's loss in Green Bay, the Jaguars are still very much in the hunt for an AFC Wild-Card spot at 6-4. The 49ers, meanwhile, need to go on a serious winning streak and hope their NFC Wild-Card rivals pick each other off along the way.

Mike Singletary is dedicated to quarterback Alex Smith, but he is waffling about the kind of offense he wants Smith to run. Though Singletary has advocated a power-running offense, he has gotten pressure from fans, media and some of his own players � Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis � to open up the playbook and go with a shotgun and spread attack. It will be interesting to see if the famously stubborn coach relents.
