By: wacky nation James Bamber, author of Wacky Nation and founder of wackynation.com is desperately seeking a Penny Farthing as he continues his quest to enter the wackiest and silliest contests around the world. The Knutsford Great Race may still be nine months away but James Bamber is already plotting one of his many wacky challenges for 2010 (‘yet another year trying absolutely anything once’). The Event: The Knutsford Great Race is a Penny Farthing race that takes place just once every decade. Competitors must ‘race’ around a one km course for 3 hours and whoever manages the most laps is the winner. Simple, isn’t it? Except there are a two snags: James has never ridden a Pennyfarthing. In fact, he doesn’t even own one. Secondly, he struggles to stay on a mountain bike let alone one of the most awkward modes of transport invented. But that won’t deter James who is determined to tackle every wacky sport going, whatever it takes, whatever he looks like and whatever the consequences. Can you help James? James would like to hear from anyone who can loan him a Penny Farthing (or even sell, if not too expensive) – but he will need time to practice. Maybe a company would like to sponsor James for the event or does somebody own a Penny Farthing and would like to see their pride and joy entered into the highly prestigious event. James is also interested in making up a team of four. James can be contacted via email -wackynation@ Information on the 2010 Pennyfarthing Race: The three-hour high wheel race is an open invitation event for Penny Farthings (ordinary or high wheel). Reproduction machines are permitted. There will be a maximum of 50 teams, solo or teams of 4. The riding team may have a small team of mechanics and support staff. The Knutsford Great Race is also a once a decade event and for many there will only be 1 or may be 2 opportunities for genuine success. Alongside the Penny Farthing race, organizers are also hosting the World Boneshaker Championships. More information can be found at ww.theknutsfordgreatrace.co.uk. ENDS Notes to Editor FYI 1) JAMES BAMBER James Bamber from Tiverton in Devon is the co-author of Wacky Nation: 50 unbelievable sports and contests. He has also taken part in over 100 mad, crazy and downright idiotic events in the UK. James is on an action packed (and lifelong) schedule to enter contests and races around the world. His underlying intention is to discover THE wackiest contest, race or championship, whether it is in Totnes or Timbuktu. James finally achieved his first major victory last week, when he won the Pantomime Horse Grand National in Birmingham. 2) Wacky Nation: 50 Unbelievable Days Out at Britain’s Craziest Contests James presents 50 of the oddest contests you could ever have imagined. With a strongly practical, get-involved- James is back on the road for books 2 and 3 (yet to sign a book deal), before taking on the world to continue promoting his dubious reputation as the world’s biggest idiot. He is open to challenges from anyone disputing his status. # # # Wacky Nation is James Bamber and Sally Raynes. They are the authority on wacky sports and contests and have written a book, set up a website and now started to organise their own unique and completely mad contests. End
