Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, limits the amount of food the stomach can hold by surgically reducing the stomach’s capacity to a few ounces. In addition to reducing food intake, Gastric Bypass procedure alters the digestion process, which curbs the amount of calories and nutrients absorbed. It helps patients suffering with obesity or morbid obesity lose excess weight and resolve or improve their obesity-related health conditions.
Stealth Gastric Bypass allows the surgeon to complete all steps of traditional Gastric Bypass procedure in a more minimally invasive fashion. The main difference between Stealth Gastric Bypass and conventional Gastric Bypass is the number and size of small incisions created in abdominal wall for inserting surgical instruments and a laparoscope. Instead of traditional five (5) incisions, Stealth approach utilizes three (3) incisions. One instrument and a laparoscope are inserted through a single incision above umbilicus. Two other instruments are inserted through 3mm incisions, creating minimal defect in abdominal wall.
Stealth Gastric Bypass can be completed in less than 90 minutes. The technique has several advantages for patients. It results in significantly less post operative discomfort and pain at incision sites. Additionally, by reducing the number and size of incision sites, it allows for significantly improved cosmetic results and a faster return to normal activity.
Dr. Alexander Abkin was the first surgeon in New Jersey and on the East Coast to perform the Stealth Gastric Bypass.
