Ted Turner and Tavis Smiley have become Climate Allies in support of the ‘tck tck tck - Time for Climate Justice’ campaign, an initiative of Kofi Annan, President of the Global Humanitarian Forum. They are seeking to raise awareness for Climate Justice ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
Ted Turner, owner of CNN news network and founder of the United Nations Foundation, summarised the urgency of the Time for Climate Justice Campaign:
“There is no bigger problem than tackling climate change. If we don’t do something now there’s a good chance we will lose all of the beautiful places we love, most of the world’s species, and much of humanity. There’s only one planet. We’re all in this together, and we’ve got to come together to save it. Tick-Tick-Tick”
Tavis Smiley, a popular African-American journalist and radio and television host, drew attention to the injustice of climate change:
“Apathy for climate change is one of the world’s worst injustices against its poorest citizens. Leaders at Copenhagen must listen to the voices of the underprivileged first, for they will be the first ones to rise up or the first ones to die.”
The Global Humanitarian Forum’s ‘tck tck tck - Time for Climate Justice’ campaign was created by Havas Worldwide and was launched earlier this year at the 56th Cannes International Advertising Festival.
Climate Justice has, at its heart, the principle that emissions have a price and greenhouse gas emitters must pay. The countries, and peoples, who are suffering the most from the adverse consequences of climate change – both now and in the future – have done the least to cause it.
