In a befitting climax to the fiercely contested crown Lorena Ochoa won the Rolex Player of the Year award with conclusion of the last round of the last event on the LPGA Tour. Statistically speaking, as the top 120 players on the LPGA Tour entered the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex there was a three way contest for the top honors since 30 points were at stake and there were three players within the 30 point bracket to the top rank. Among Lorena Ochoa, Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr each had a mathematical chance of becoming the 2009 Rolex Player of the Year. But the real contest seemed to be between Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin who had been vying for the award for a long time and the fans of golf were hooked on to the each shot of the last event they were playing in.
LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex was being played at the Houstonian Golf and Country Club and the course had become the battleground for the greatest glory on the LPGA Tour, the 2009 Rolex Player of the Year award. Even though the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of woman golfing which every woman golfer dreams of winning, yet the most awaited moment of the event this year was the one which was to decide the winner of the Rolex Player of the Year. Going by the performance Jiyai Shin and Lorena Ochoa had been carving out all year long it was more than obvious that the contest would go down to the wire and who would be the eventual winner was something no one could be sure of or predict. The way things turned out that is precisely what happened.
Leading the race at the start of the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex was Jiyai Shin who has played tremendously well in her rookie season to outclass the top of the players on the Tour. The Korean sensation comes with a record breaking performance on the Korean Tour and has three LPGA Tour wins to her name in the debut year itself. Not only that, she is also the leader on the LPGA Official Money List. With Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award already in her pocket she had been eying the only award eluding her, the Rolex Player of the Year. But unfortunately at the end of the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex she had to content with what she had already won. In spite of losing out on one award she had made her mark on the LPGA Tour.
Lorena Ochoa, the Mexican golfer who eventually won the Rolex Player of the Year award, had another splendid year on the LPGA Tour. With her second place finish in the virtual grand finale of the LPGA Tour she secured her fourth straight Rolex Player of the Year award. She also added the prestigious Vare Trophy, which is given for the lowest scoring average, to her collection for the fourth time. With yet another Rolex Player of the Year award Lorena Ochoa has made a perfect ending to a great year she had had.
