PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 27, 2009 -
Bay Area Chess, the leading California Chess Organization, today announces the largest number of pre-registered players for the CalChess State Class Championship taking place Thanksgiving weekend. The event carries State Title for 13 classes and offers the largest locally organized prize fund in recent history. The tournament has already attracted 12 Masters, including 5 International Masters.

The tournament, which is expected to attract over 300 players and even more spectators, begins on November 27 and runs through November 29, 2009. Players of all ages and levels are signing up in masses to compete for a State Chess Title.

The State Class Championship is a unique event where new and experienced players compete against others, with similar ranking, to earn a State Title. Participants range in age from under 4 to adults over 80 years old. Top winners in each section will be crowned State Class Champion. The top 7 classes also carry a prize pool of over $8,000 just in time for the holidays and promise to be heavily attended.

Dr. Salman Azhar, the Executive Director or Bay Area Chess tells us,“This tournament offers 50% higher prize fund to attract players out of the local area. This is just the beginning as we are planning to offer five figure prize fund for Memorial Day next year."

The tournament is organized by Bay Area Chess, a US Chess Federation affiliate, that prides itself on providing a congenial environment where youth can build self-esteem while playing in a healthy competitive environment and develop cells they never knew they had in their brain. Chess has made a very popular come back in America as players, parents, and teachers are all realizing the benefits of the rigorous workout chess gives the brain.

“It is amazing to see large amount of young children in the same room, focused and calm. Learning and appreciating the value of patient competition.” said Dr. Salman Azhar.
