While the perhaps the most popular way to enjoy a caravan is to watch Jeremy Clarkson joyously blow one apart, some see them as a unique environment in which to discover their artistic sides whilst cramming the contents of a home into a tiny space. Slightly more tolerated is the canal boat often seen as a nostalgic link to a slower more relaxed bygone era and renowned for their brightly painted exteriors and quirkiness.
Speaking at the event will be artist Julia Dennis who in 2007 as part of the MoDA exhibition Sculpting The Suburban Landscape deployed a two berth caravan as a sculptural retreat for her project entitled The Untold. She is currently compiling photos and stories from the caravan to document the project.
Emma Underhill is director and curator of UP Projects (http://upprojects.com) who specialises in producing artworks and events outside of the conventional gallery and museum surroundings. In 2008 she helped with The Smallest Cinema In the World, where a caravan played host to a specially designed auditorium and more recently oversaw Public Works Canal Club that was a floating structure which hosted a number of events during Liverpool's Biennale.
The event takes place on Monday 7th December 2009 at The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ. Doors open at 6.30pm and things kick off at 7pm, tickets cost £6 for non-members, £4 members and students, and £2 for student members. A bar is available in the incoming and during the interval, this is great for networking and socialising.
