Vicinity Jobs (http://www.vicinityjobs.com) – Canada’s first network of community-centric vertical job search engines – announced its expansion into the Greater Vancouver Area today. A new Vicinity Jobs search engine is now live (at http://vancouver.vicinityjobs.com ), enabling residents of the Greater Vancouver Area to search through hundreds of web sites for employment opportunities close to their homes and avoid long-distance commutes.

Unlike traditional employment websites -- which only provide access to jobs that employers have advertised with them (usually for a fee) – Vicinity Jobs search engines utilize a complex technology platform to aggregate and classify information about job openings published on many different web sites. Each Vicinity Jobs web site serves a separate geographic area, enabling local job seekers to search for job openings in their home communities advertised on hundreds of job boards and corporate web sites.

The expansion into Vancouver makes perfect sense to Strac Ivanov – the co-founder of the Vicinity Jobs network. “Since day one, our objective has been to help make Canadian communities more socially and environmentally sustainable”, he says. “Long-distance commuting is a key reason why we are among the world’s biggest polluters per capita. Many Canadians end up commuting long distances simply because they are not fully aware of employment opportunities available to them close to their homes. This is a problem that is as serious in Vancouver as it is in Toronto - or any other large Canadian city.” By making information about local job openings easily available to job seekers, the Vicinity Jobs network hopes to help eliminate the need for long commutes, and reduce the time people spend on the road – and the pollution resulting from these trips.

In Ontario, the Vicinity Jobs objective has resonated well with many working-age people, and word about the service has spread rapidly through the communities. Many local career professionals have put their support behind the initiative as well, and have provided valuable content for publishing on the Vicinity Jobs web sites. As a result, the Vicinity Jobs network now provides free access not only to information about job openings, but also to a directory of hundreds of non-commercial career advice articles contributed by professional career coaches, employment advisors, and career counselors. Ivanov hopes that the initiative will encounter the same warm welcome in Vancouver as it did in Toronto.

Launched in Ontario in 2006, Vicinity Jobs has grown from a single job search engine serving the communities of York Region just North of Toronto, to a network of community employment portals serving tens of thousands of job seekers every week in all communities of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas. FairyLakeJobs.net – the first Vicinity Jobs web site – was among North America’s first vertical job search engines. The Vicinity Jobs network of employment web sites is owned and operated by Newmarket, Ontario-based Vicinity Jobs Inc.
