Today's the first day of many that are going to be below 100, so we're thinking about going outdoors to our favorite spot for fall camping at Oak Flats, AZ. It's 25 miles from home, and the elevation is about 4,000 feet, so the weather will be perfect for camping hiking. We are always curious about our elevation when we're up there, so last month, I bought a useful watch online to tell us our altitude. It's called the TECH 4 O AW1O Alti-Watch and it gives us the exact altitude of wherever we are. We've were debating whether to get a weather radio or this watch but given the fact the watch gives us instant information for precisely where we are, we went that route. It's good to know how high we are when camping so we have an idea of how long it will take to cook our food, what the weather's like, and how much elevation gain we have made or lost as we hike along the beautiful mountain trails all over the central and eastern parts of Arizona.
I found this altimeter watch online at a store that stocks a lot of camping and outdoor sports' supplies. It's called All Star Sports Outlet. Since we do a lot of camping hiking, this watch was perfect because not only does it tell the time and the elevation, it also gives the barometric pressure, temperature and date. It will tell us the total ascent and descent, too.
Since we do most of our camping hiking in the mountains, the weather can change fast, especially in the summer when afternoon thunderstorms are more the rule than not. Florida has the most lightening strikes of any state in the US, followed by Arizona, and most of those occur in the mountains. Shortly before a storm strikes, the barometric pressure drops, so with this altimeter watch, we'll know when to look for cover or find a safe place to wait out the thunderstorm. I love the thunderstorms though because they keep the forests so green all summer in Arizona.
