WellMed Opens Innovative School to Train Medical Assistants

WellMed Medical Management is sponsoring the Medical Preparatory School of Allied Health to fill a void for affordable, quality medical assistant training in South Texas. The company will hire top graduates.

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 24, 2009 -
San Antonio, TX – A new school designed to fill the void in affordable training for high-quality medical assistants begins classes December 1 on the South Side.

Medical Preparatory School of Allied Health (Med Prep) is the only privately run school of its kind with a curriculum designed by healthcare professionals. Tuition for the 10-month program is nearly half the average for private schools of this kind in San Antonio.

One of Med Prep’s goals is to address practical needs of the Allied Health industry through traditional classroom learning with real-life experts and hands-on experience for prospective medical assistants, one of the fastest-growing positions in healthcare.

Med Prep is sponsored by WellMed Medical Management, a diversified healthcare company that owns and operates 21 senior-focused medical clinics in the Greater San Antonio area, and 7 more in Austin and Florida.  WellMed is also South Texas’ largest physician-owned practice management company, supporting more than 100 independent physicians’ offices in Texas and Florida.

The 4,600-square-foot campus is at 509 SW Military, Suite 101, adjacent to the Elvira Cisneros Senior Community Center by WellMed. The facility features a 17-seat observation classroom, mock examination rooms and traditional classrooms with a computer lab. The coordinating instructor will work with guest lecturers including physicians, nurse practitioners, clinic administrators and other healthcare industry experts to deliver an industry-driven curriculum.

An open house event for community leaders and stakeholders is set from 12:30 – 2 p.m. Thursday, December 3.

WellMed leaders developed the school to help fill a growing need in the industry and to train medical assistants according to the high standards required of staff at its clinics.

“Our vision is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and opportunities for growth that will help them serve the healthcare needs of today and tomorrow,” said Dr. George M. Rapier III, WellMed Chairman and CEO.

WellMed partnered with Workforce Solutions Alamo (formerly Alamo WorkSource) and the job training program Project QUEST to arrange for full tuition assistance for the first class of 10 students.

Med Prep is one of the few locally owned and operated health careers schools in San Antonio.  Other private schools of this kind charge a student, on average, $14,000 for an 8-month program. Full tuition at Med Prep is $7,995 for an intensive 10-month program.

Med Prep also offers more hands-on training than most other programs. The curriculum includes two externships, in which students will work side-by-side with physicians and other healthcare providers for a total of 180 hours.

Med Prep classes cover general studies such as anatomy and physiology, medical law and ethics and CPR/First Aid; administrative duties such as medical insurance, billing and coding and office procedures; and clinical training in pharmacology, medical math and more.
