FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Debby Chaddick thought she had achieved a healthy integration of faith, intellect and overall health in her happy life as a wife, mother, high school psychology teacher, and activist. That perception slammed into an immovable barrier when she was diagnosed with a chronic pain disorder nearly nine years ago. She was surprised to find that the words of comfort offered by friends and acquaintances felt inappropriate.

“People think they’re helping when they throw out comments like, ‘Well, whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,’ ” said Chaddick.  “It’s even worse when they try to spiritualize it by saying, ‘God is trying to teach you something’ or ‘God won’t give you more than you can handle.’”

Chaddick’s experiences sent her on a spiritual journey through her grief and pain to find hope again.  Her book, A Spirituality of Hope:  My Journey Through Pain and Grief, chronicles that journey.

“I’ve spent most of the last decade questioning and challenging what I thought was the ‘truth,’” she recalled, “and what emerged was a stronger, more hopeful, faith.”
She hopes that readers who are suffering will use her words to begin their own hopeful journeys, secure in the knowledge that God’s love is for everyone.  She acknowledges that there are no easy answers but believes that easy answers are overrated.

“People in pain don’t even need easy answers – they know that easy answers don’t represent an honest appraisal of the situation,” she explained, “but all people
need hope.”
