PRLog (Press Release) -
Nov 23, 2009 -
Step one: “information”
. Let your child know that bullies are cowards. A bully in the 5th grade is not picking on an 8th grader. He or she is pushing around a 1st or 2nd grader. Bullies do not feel good about themselves and that is why they pick on those who are smaller or weaker.
Step two: “affirmation”
. Since bullies pick on those who are weak and show fear, it is essential that your child have confidence and self worth. Body language is very important. Have your child stand up straight with their shoulders back and their head up high. Have them say out loud with conviction, “I believe in myself and I am not afraid!”
Step three: “presentation”
. Have your child practice at home as if they are walking in the halls or the school yard. They should walk with an air of confidence and assertiveness and not of fear and helplessness. Making eye contact and then looking away shows that they acknowledge the bully, but are not afraid of them.
Step four: “communication”
. As a parent you can not help your child if they are too afraid or ashamed to talk to you. Speak to your child openly and let them know you will help and support them no matter what.
As long as there are kids with low self esteem, there will be bullies who try to make themselves feel better at the expense of others. The best defense against a bully is making sure your child has a positive self image. Training in the martial arts empowers children with self discipline while building their confidence and self esteem.
