Nov. 22, 2009 - PRLog -- NJ fitness expert and personal trainer, Edward Albert, helps his clients avoid stuffing themselves like a turkey on Thanksgiving with simple but effective tips.  Albert lists these top tips for anyone who wants to control their eating habits this holiday.

Gaining weight during the holiday season is a common fear among many Americans. Thanksgiving seems to be the holiday that everyone loves to hate.  Albert says people tend to gorge themselves at Thanksgiving dinner because they justify their actions by saying things like, ‘After Thanksgiving, I’m starting my diet.’  But Albert insists that there are simple ways to avoid feeling like a stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving Day if one REALLY doesn’t want to.

Here are his top suggestions for enjoying a healthy and happy holiday:

1) Limit the amount of appetizers you consume by sipping on club soda or seltzer water with lemon or lime.  The carbonation will help you feel fuller.

2) Before you begin eating dinner, drink a glass of water.  Again, this will help you feel fuller.

3)  Take small portions and eat slower than you normally would.  It takes the brain approximately 20 minutes to register that that stomach is full.  If you go up for seconds, make sure to take small portions again, and pace yourself.  Remember, it’s only food…you can always have some tomorrow.

4) When you want to go back for extra portions, ask yourself, is it your stomach that is truly hungry or is it your mouth that is seeking more flavor?  Usually it’s your mouth. That’s ok. Understand that you can have some more later in the evening, if and when you really do get hungry again.  Set aside a small doggie bag to take home with you.

5) If your mouth is telling you to eat more, chew on a piece of gum. This will take the flavor out of your mouth and give your teeth something to do.

6) Make or purchase a low-fat dessert to bring with you. This way you are sure that there is a delicious, low-fat alternative for you to enjoy.  You can make low-fat brownies, chocolate cake or even cookies.  Almost every bakery brand (Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, etc) has a low-fat alternative recipe on the side of their box.

Albert also suggests getting in a good work-out before a holiday meal to start the day off on the right foot.  Consumers who want to learn more from Albert can follow his blog at http://www.fitnessdietsonline.com as well as follow him on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NJFitnessExpert
