Nov. 22, 2009 - PRLog -- The treatment of Sleep Apnea consisted of CPAP or painful surgery for many years.  CPAP is still considered the Gold Standard of treatment for sleep apnea but oral appliances and ental Sleep Medicine are taking center stage in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.  The AASM or American Academy of Sleep Medicine now considers oral appliances a first line treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea.  While the AASM still considers CPAP the first line treatment for severe sleep apnea  numerous studies are now showing that oral appliances are also successful in treating severe sleep apnea.

Untrated sleep apnea is deadly with patients suffering up to a six fold increase in heart attacks and strokes.  More dangerous to the public is the fact that untreated sleep apnea patients have slower reaction times than someone who is legally drunk.  There is a six-fold increase in motor vehicle accidents (MVA) in patients with untreated sleep apnea and a 300% increase in MVA involving serious injuries.
