An IP address is a number used by all the information technology devices to communicate with other devices on a network. IP address consists of four sets of numbers which are separated by a dotted squad or a period and are called octets. In most of the cases an IP address is used to trace out the location from which any computer is connecting to the internet. Without a unique IP address, the information cannot be transmitted. It is the ISP or the Internet Service Provider who has the responsibility of assigning IP addresses to a business or an E-mail server.
