On Thursday 26 November, in the run up to World AIDS Day, the African Children’s Choir will travel to Downing Street to meet with, and perform for, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah. By all accounts, everyone at No. 10 is very excited at the prospect of the visit. The children’s presentation of African song and dance in traditional costume is simply spectacular.
The choir, whose current tour of the UK and Ireland is drawing to a close, is an ambassador for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 charity and counts celebrities such as Bob Geldof, Matt Damon and Annie Lennox, among their friends.
In September the choir launched their international 12 Million AIDS Orphans Campaign at Parliament Buildings, Stormont in Belfast and on Tuesday 1 December they will participate in a tribute to Annie Lennox at the British Red Cross organised gala dinner, in her honour, in the Guildehall, London.
The Prime Minister and the choir are no strangers. While Chancellor, Mr Brown received the prestigious Malaika award, a bronze mask which the choir presents to acknowledge commitment to the children of Africa. Other notable recipients include George W Bush and, most recently, Bob Geldof.
