PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 20, 2009 -
Last week four high school students from across Canada were presented with a scholarship from ECO Canada (Environmental Careers Organization). The students are: Camila Das Gupta (Halifax, NS), Lars Boggild (Vancouver, BC), Bradley Jennings (Delaware, ON) and Emily Rafuse (Windsor, NS).

This is the inaugural year for ECO Canada’s Scholarship Program which represents the organization’s commitment to encourage Canada’s youth to further their passion for the environment through education. ECO Canada plans to award Canadian students annually with $2,500 towards their first-year tuition in an environmental program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

The top candidate each year is additionally awarded the Edit Petrovic Memorial Scholarship; honouring the memory of Edit Petrovic, an ECO Canada employee. The recipient of this award is recognized as someone who is similarly committed to their academic career in environmental research with the hopes of instilling in them the drive, vision and commitment that Edit embodied. ECO Canada is proud to announce that Camila Das Gupta is the first recipient of the Edit Petrovic Memorial Scholarship, which awards her an additional $2,500 towards her post-secondary tuition.

Scholarships are awarded to individuals who have shown leadership in his or her community in environmental protection, conservation and preservation of natural resources, or environmental sustainability. Qualified students are chosen based on a reference letter and an essay about their environmental accomplishments and ambitions.

Funding for the scholarships comes from ECO Canada, and friends and family of Edit Petrovic.

To qualify for the scholarship program, students must:

• Have been accepted to an environmental program in a Canadian post-secondary institution
• Have graduated high school within the last 12 months
• Have demonstrated leadership in their communities relevant to environmental issues
• Be a Canadian citizen

Applications for the scholarship are reviewed by environmental industry leaders looking to make positive change for youth. For more information on the 2010 scholarship contact Sunny Cheung at info@eco.ca or visit www.eco.ca/scholarship.

ECO Canada’s Career Awareness Strategy

The objective of ECO Canada’s Career Awareness Strategy is to develop a national environmental education and career-pathing strategy to increase the number of students entering into environmental post-secondary programs. This project seeks to develop a dynamic community of inspirational discussion and resource-sharing so educators, students and their parents can learn about environmental careers.
