If you think you're too old to do an ambitious fitness workout program, think again! Sixty-
When asked for her secret, she replied, "No matter what your age or physical condition, there's one fact that holds true across the board--muscle burns a lot of calories. And, furthermore, you're NEVER TOO OLD to build muscle."
She went on to explain that as humans age they lose muscle mass, beginning around the age of 30, unless they regularly do exercise that either builds muscle or, at least prevents muscle loss. For every decade we live over 30, we can see another 10% loss in muscle mass. The solution is clear--workouts that build muscle are critical for our fitness as well as for maintaining a healthy weight by losing fat.
She wants everyone to know that "The more muscle we have, the more calories we burn, and not just while we're awake. Muscles burn calories even while we sleep! The obvious corollary to this is, if we have less muscle we burn fewer calories, and, unless we modify our food intake, well, we all know what that leads to!"
Resistance training, such as using free weights for exercise, needs to be a main part of our weekly exercise, Parks says. Bodyweight exercises can be equally valuable, and are recommended for those just starting out. The other parts are important, too, such as stretching for flexibility and doing interval or shot-burst training, but her main focus is on building muscle to burn calories and to speed-up fat loss.
It's important to work out using robust weights with fewer reps rather than low weights with many repetitions. Studies show that using heavier weight with lower reps is much more efficient than low weight with a lot of reps for building muscle and burning fat! And, she hastens to add, this is especially true for women!
Parks warns, "Of course it's important to get your Doctor's OK when embarking on a strenuous fitness program, but, 9 times out of 10, your Doctor will be thrilled that you're taking the initiative to get stronger, thus promoting your fitness and healthy weight. But you'll also be doing a lot to prevent insidious diseases like Diabetes and other problems related to overweight or obesity."
