Today has been a busy one for charity organisations across the world, schools, libraries and even a few TV studios are packed to the gunnels with toys, books and banners for children in need. The famed annual fundraiser is not, however, the only thing that’s special about the 20th November, as it will also mark Universal Children’s Day.

Established by The United Nations in 1954, the 20th of November has been organised and overseen by the United Nations Children’s Fund ever since. The central aim of the day is to promote and improve the rights of children on an international scale through a series of events and educational workshops around the world. Also marking the anniversaries of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the day has been instrumental in bringing about several reforms and increasing awareness of the issues that affect many underprivileged children.

For those who want to do more for this worthy cause than make a donation, there are plenty of other ways to play a more hands on role. Mature gap year Travel Company Gap Year for Grown Ups, work in partnership with several charitable organisations and volunteer projects around the world, which focus on the welfare and education of children. With projects and programmes based in over 45 destinations, Gap Year for Grown Ups give travellers the chance to combine making a lasting difference with life changing travel.

Ideal for volunteers with a little educational experience and a lot of enthusiasm, the Tanzania Community Volunteers project, is a central part of revitalising the impoverished communities of Dar es Salaam. Travellers will be assisting with Maths and English classes, teaching children of varying ages in both schools and day care centres. There will also opportunities to help with classes in other subjects such as science and IT, or the chance to get involved with after school activities such as music and sports coaching, and health awareness initiatives.

For volunteers who want a more specific focus the Thailand Teaching English in Schools and Orphanages programme, aims to give children better future prospects and a stable learning environment. Teaching in orphanages, primary schools and secondary schools, volunteers will focus on giving youngsters a better understanding of the English language. Not only will travellers be helping children to improve their future prospects, they will also be able to gain a unique insight into the Thai way of life, living and working within the local community.

The Peru Youth Outreach Project offers volunteers the opportunity to work in an orphanage, a day care centre, a school or in a centre for young adults. The projects aim to give some of Peru’s poorest children a better standard of life and a safe refuge from life on the streets on a range of community-based projects in Cusco. Travellers can choose to assist with education, everyday tasks or simply give local youngsters the love and care they desperately need.
