PRLog - Nov. 19, 2009 - HOUSTON -- Chef Tarsha Gary, Proprietor of Crave Gourmet Bakery and Catered Cafe, has once again been named as a 40 under 40 honoree. This most recent “40 Top Chefs under 40” accomplishment is bestowed on her by the Mother Nature Network and Gary was ranked #12. The forty rising young culinary stars selected are bringing more than just good food to the table; they work to promote better health for people and the planet.
In addition to her role at Crave Gourmet, Gary is also the Founder of ECOTONE- an acronym for- an ecological atonement model – cultivating urban organic food. The ground breaking site, currently under construction, will be hosted at St. Charles Street Community Garden located at 3616 St. Charles Street in Houston, Texas in the heart of historic Third Ward and charted to be an intimate allotment garden specifically designed to service its immediate surrounding community.
“I feel that Chefs have an obligation to not only bring tasteful entrees to the table but to use quality and healthy ingredients as well,” says Gary. “My work, particularly, in the Urban community is aimed at promoting exquisite culinary offerings while showcasing a vast variety of fruits and vegetables to promote wholesome menus. Ideally, these fruits and vegetables will be local homegrown organic crops.”
Already designated as a local young leader, Gary was among the 2009 Houston’s Top “40 Under 40” Professionals honored by the Houston Business Journal. In July 2008, she founded Community Kids Cook w/ Chef Tarsha, a hands-on, month-long summer cooking camp for youths that aims to curb childhood obesity and promote healthy food education. In addition, she is a successful mentor and teacher. On Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at ECOTONE, the surrounding community is invited to a complimentary Thanksgiving lunch where she, along with several other Houston Chefs, will serve up good cheer, good food and good fellowship.
In addition, she was a 2008 Pinnacle Award finalist, an honor granted by the Houston Citizens' Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Gary has served as a demonstration chef for more than five years for the American Heart Association's "Cultural Initiatives African-American Outreach Taskforce" and the "Go Red Women Campaign." A Connecticut native and former radio talk-show host and journalist, Tarsha Gary sharpened her culinary skills at Houston Community College's pastry program, alongside internationally acclaimed pastry chef Eddy Van Damme, aka "The Prince of Pastry."
