CIG: Copenhagen may still light the way for $33 billion trade in carbon offsets.

Carbon market players are urging delegates to seize the opportunity to agree reforms to the $33 billion carbon credit industry.

Nov. 18, 2009 - PRLog -- CIG sources indicate that December’s summit in Copenhagen, now highly unlikely to produce a new climate change pact, is being pegged by carbon market industry members as a good forum for settling issues for the rapidly expanding market.

The general consensus globally is that the Copenhagen climate conference is set to , at best yield only a political agreement on matters such as emissions cuts by richer nations, and that a proper legally binding treaty will only be forthcoming in 2010.

With the Kyoto Protocol set to expire in 2012, next year is cutting it finer than the December 2009 deadline most had anticipated. CIG understands that market players say this gives delegates a prime chance to address some key issues surrounding the carbon offset market.

"If everyone is pragmatic and asks 'what can we fix while we're here?' this could be a golden opportunity for addressing all the institutional and architectural reforms which don't require any targets to be undertaken by the U.S.," a spokesperson for clean energy project developers EcoSecurities is quoted as saying."This could be a very clear win for Copenhagen."

One area of particular concern, CIG believes, is the Clean Development Mechanism worth around $6.5 billion to developing nations, which is presently dominated by China and India, and the CDM's executive board, which is blamed for bottlenecks which investors say create long waits for carbon offsets called Certified Emissions Reductions.

Other issues include the payment of tropical nations tens of billions of dollars to preserve rainforests and scaling up on present Kyoto schemes.
