Michael Ernest Sweet, one of Canada's leading classroom educators, has won a 2009 National Council of English Teachers High School Teacher of Excellence Award. Sweet is being honored for his founding of the Learning for a Cause Student Press Initiative which uses print-on-demand technology to allow students to publish real books from the classroom.
The Learning for a Cause Student Press has published four award-winning anthologies of student writing in as many years and shows no signs of slowing down. Last year's anthology – Raising Humanity – features a foreword and glowing endorsement from Hollywood's Martin Sheen.
Michael Sweet was also recently honored in his own country with Canada's top award for teaching the Prime Minister's Award. In 2008, he was appointed to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and honored on the Wall of Fame at the National Teacher's Hall of Fame.
