Think Winter Safety – Think Winter Tyres

Research shows that we should be following the lead of Germany and Switzerland and changing to winter tyres in October.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 18, 2009 -
Research shows that we should be following the lead of Germany and Switzerland and changing to winter tyres in October.

Accident rates are significantly higher during the winter season and the continued use of summer tyres means that braking distances are increased.

Statistics show that when the temperature drops below 7C (which in the UK means from October to April) weather has an adverse effect on driving, regardless of the level of ice or snowfall.

But in this uncertain financial climate many consumers may not be able to afford new tyres so here are some tips to maximize tyre safety as winter approaches:

Check your tyre tread
summer tyres have 3mm tread depth while winter tyres have 4mm tread depth.

Check you tyre pressure
68% of European drivers have over or under inflated tyres*

Inspect tyres
Look regularly for cracks, cuts and bulges

Check wheel balance and alignment
Misalignment will effect the handling and safety of the vehicle

Formula One Autocentres offers a free wheel balance and alignment check
