Twenty and thirty somethings are turning to the past for presents this festive season. With many feeling the economic pinch, it's gifts, such as jigsaw puzzles, which will last that are receiving the thumbs up from younger consumers.
Women's Institute
A good barometer of the new jigsaw trend is that the Women's Institute (W.I), itself recognised as being trendy, has been organising jigsaw puzzle evenings.
"It's now cool to be a member of the WI and indeed the Islington branch, full of those born in the 1970s and 1980s, enjoyed a competitive jigsaw puzzle evening recently," says Tim Mitchell, Marketing Manager at All Jigsaw Puzzles.co.uk, the UK's largest online supplier for the pastime.
"We're also hearing that many others in that age group are enjoying an evening with a jigsaw puzzle, a bottle of wine and friends just in staying in. Indeed it is becoming the norm. There's sometimes pressure to buy expensive presents for friends, but buying a jigsaw is a relatively cheap thing to do."
Tim says their sales figures for this Christmas show one type of puzzles by far which sells above the rest.
"It's the personalised puzzles, where people can turn a favourite jigsaw, into a puzzle which remain the most popular. They really are truly unique gifts and since they were first introduced some 20 years ago printing has become much better. What's nice is that people are also adding personalised messages. We've even had a number of marriage proposals to print as puzzles," says Tim.
Due to harder economic times, those in their 20s and 30s are having to think more about their Christmas gifts this year. They want something that is relatively cheap and will last. Old pastimes are being re-visited but yet this Internet -savvy generation have even found a modern twist in the form of personalised puzzles.
