The CIO Strategies Middle East Event has presented the CIO Strategies Awards to ten top CIOs and IT executives.
The Awards ceremony – which took place on Monday, November 16th, 2009 at the JW Marriott in Dubai, UAE – recognised the achievements of the MENA region’s IT leaders.

The Awards’ evaluation process was based on “leadership, achievement, measurable outcomes, innovation and overall contribution to the company and industry”.
Patrick Neaf, Divisional Senior Vice President, Mercator – the IT subsidiary of the Emirates Group – walked away with an award for “implementing their most successful IT Project, Calogi – Cargo Logistics. According to naseba: “Calogi is an innovative solution for the cargo industry that takes a fresh look at the landscape and creates an online community of industry players linked in real time using the fabric of information technology and the web”.
Imad Taha, CIO, Emirates Driving Institute and Belhasa International Group was awarded for “business automation and monitoring using vehicle tracking systems and RFid cards via GPRS links, helping to automate schedules for driving license students, standardise training and introduce a source of information for management and others”.
Ruwan Aluthgedara, Chief Technology Officer, Mubasher Financial Services was rewarded for “the Mubasher e-trading platform, the first ever in-house built straight through processing platform that caters to multi-market, multi-instrument, multi-currency, multi-access channel and multi-language brokerage solutions for use in online investment purposes in the MENA region”.
Ahmed Almulla, Vice President, IT Information Technology Department, Dubai Aluminium Company won for the “Smelter Analytics System that was introduced to enable a shift from periodic reports to proactive analysis, challenging users to extract useful information from the rich data repository”.
Colin Gow, Project Manager for the Human Capital Management Project, Al Futtaim Group was awarded for “Human Capital Management, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) tool that replaces costly legacy systems and introduces self-service capabilities for employees and managers across the UAE’s Al Futtaim Group”.
Bassam Al-Ashqar, Director of Information Technology Department, Arabsat won for “the ORACLE REP + CRM + CAPACITY MANAGEMENT project that enabled Arabsat to optimise the utilisation of satellite capacities by giving online statuses of the transponders and satellites”.
According to Arabsat: “The increase in capacity utilisation will be worth by 2012”.
Ali Al Hamdany, Director of Information Technology and Corporate Projects, Air Arabia was awarded for “achieving the right blend between in-house competencies and those available in outsourcing and delivering the full IT end-to-end systems, hardware and infrastructure in a short time and at a competitive budget”.
Asad Ahmed, CIO, Siemens Pakistan was awarded for “the Value IT Project which involved out tasking IT services to Siemens Pakistan and potentially bringing the ‘IT Cost per Employee’ for Middle Eastern clusters down to 15% - 20%”.
Ahmed Shokry, CIO, Ajman Bank won for “supporting the bank by introducing state-of-the-
Lamya Al Tabtebai, Executive Manager, IT, Kuwait International Bank was awarded for “Sybase Mirror Activator for Disaster Recovery Site Implementation whereby only the correct and valid date is replicated and any corruptions are efficiently removed.” The company is the “first to implement this technology nation-wide and successfully meet the requirement of the Bank and its board”.
