" Several New York public elementary schools students will participate in the first French winter celebration event aimed at public schools students on December 12th. The idea came from a group of parents whose children go to PS 125, one of the five French-English dual language programs in the New York public school system. "We just wanted to give our kids the opportunity to showcase the excellent work done by the dual language teachers in the public schools," says Rachel Smith, parent of a 1st grader at PS125. The event has generated a tremendous level of interest from the parents, the teachers and even public school officials. The winter celebration event is scheduled to occur on December 12th. The program will be as follows. Each school will present one distinctive winter celebration song and for the finale all the schools together will sing the same song. "For the first time, children learning French in public schools in several boroughs will join to sing in unison, regardless of race, creed and origin. And in French to boot," enthusiastic mom Renata Karr says.
The event attracted early support from the French consulate, which agreed to host the party at its 5th Avenue location. "We are happy to provide our help to make this event a true New York event in its diversity and its uniqueness,"
The French Winter Carol event will take place on Saturday, December 12th from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm at 934 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10021-2605.
