The popularity of Dick Drechsler’s book, Manning Up In Alaska, prompted the publisher to create a Kindle version. The true story begins many miles from the Pacific shore in the middle of a moonless, blustery night with the author tearing up the floorboards of his 47-foot sailboat to look for a flooding leak. As he toys with the idea of radioing a Mayday call to the Coast Guard and abandoning ship, the reader is reminded this wasn’t the first time the 62-year-old cancer survivor had faced down death.
Unable to travel by air after losing his ability to eat as a result of neck and throat cancer, Drechsler sold his business and, together with his wife, bought a 47-foot sailboat, sailing 2600 miles from Mexico to Alaska. Manning Up In Alaska, recounts how, after thousands of cancer sufferers and survivors began following his Web site, he created the Sail Through Cancer Foundation and wrote his action-packed, inspirational self-portrait.
Drechsler is currently traveling from port to port along the West Coast, giving his inspirational presentation to boating and cancer groups. Earlier this year, he was invited to address members of the national media at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Amazon reviewers consistently give the book 5-star ratings.
"I started reading your book last night and could not put it down,” says Sandy Golden, retired investigative reporter and founding executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.). “I'm really impressed. Manning Up in Alaska is a good read. From time to time I am sent books from new authors and, most of the time I glance at them and never read them. Your book is different. Wow! Your book really does deserve a wide audience. It is that well written and good. Congratulations."
