Nov. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- This is the first study by Psychology professors Todd Maddox and David Schnyer explored the domain of procedural learning, and the findings revealed that sleep deprivation causes some people to shift from a faster and more accurate process of information categorization (information-integration) to a more controlled, explicit process (rule-based), resulting in negative effects on performance.

Do you have a history of snoring and sleep apnea? Learn the symptoms at http://www.ihatecpap.com. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is a disorder in which the tissues at the back of the throat temporarily collapse during sleep, causing repeated stops and starts in breathing during the night. This leads to poor-quality sleep and, often, daytime drowsiness.

The researchers were surprised to find the adverse effects of sleep deprivation on information processing varied among individuals. Schnyer believes that the finding has implications for training purposes for high-pressure, life-and-death jobs.
