With more than 35,000 people from six continents descending on Phoenix for the Greenbuild 2009 Convention and Expo, Mayor Phil Gordon presided over the dedication and ribbon cutting of the first National Green Building Standard Emerald-certified remodeled home in the United States, verified by the NAHB Research Center.
The landmark residence at 150 W Elm Street in Phoenix is one of many houses remodeled to eco-friendly LEED or NAHB standards by Phoenix-based Green Street Development, and one of three featured on the Greenbuild tour schedule. The home is located less than one half mile from the city’s light-rail corridor, as part of Green Street’s goal in helping to encourage the redevelopment of walkable neighborhoods within the city center.
“I’ve always believed in the reverse broken window theory, where one person fixing up a home encourages others to do so,” said Mayor Gordon. “The work Green Street has done on this home sets an example that we hope will extend well beyond this neighborhood and inspire others within our city and beyond.”
“We’re grateful for Mayor Gordon’s support and participation in this historic event,” remarked Green Street founder Philip Beere. “It’s not about this one home – our efforts here are a part of the Mayor’s 17-point plan, a major part of which is greening our city, and we hope our efforts here are just the beginning.”
