PRLog - Nov. 17, 2009 - NIJMEGEN, Netherlands -- A new Dutch innovation makes it possible to prevent that yearly thousands of elderly people end up in the hospital because of an accident with their mobility scooter
The ESA-system intercedes when there is the jeopardy that the mobility scooter loses its balance and falls down or when the scooter jeopardizes to loses its balance in a bend. Because of the smart brain of the system, it will prevent the scooter to fall down by slowing down the speed on the right time.

ESA stands for Electronic Stability Assistant, in the last couple of years this system has been developed and tested by the Nutraco company. The ESA-system can be seen as a little box that practically fits in every mobility scooter with three or four wheels. by the manufacturer this system easily can be build in, in the scooter. By sensors, the system continually measures the distance between the mobility scooter and the road it is on plus the G-forces. The G-forces will expand when the scooter jeopardizes to fall down or when the driver of the scooter loses its control over the steering-wheel. When the limiting value exceeds, the system intervenes by slowing down the speed.

World-wide, nearly 3 million people make use of the mobility scooter, seeing the obsolescence this number will increase with 7 million in the next ten years. In the Netherlands, 150.000 to 200.000 people make use of these scooters with an increasing rate of 35.000 people per year. Between 2000 and 2008, the number of victims has been increased with a rate of 410 percent. In most cases it is about superannuated accidents, in these cases the scooter falls down.

Such shocking numbers where enough reason for Nutraco to investigate in a safer system. “It became clear to us that due to use of the mobility scooters even more accidents happen than due of other means of transportation. Elderly people are a vulnerable group of people, for whom it is harder to balance themselves or catch themselves when they fall down. Thereby, they drive around in their scooters without any means of protection,” so says Sam Speijers from the Nutraco company.

ESA extensively has been tested, nowadays a panel of 25 elderly people and disabled persons make ample use of the mobility scooter. The price of the mobility scooter will only increase a little by implementing the new system. “Relative to the price of a mobility scooter, which ranches from 5000 to 7000 euro, the system can be seen as cheap. Thereby it is important to realize that transporting people with an ambulance of take them up in a hospital cost a enormous amount of money, without even consider the bodily damage. This system can prevent a lot of accidents in the future“ (Speijers, 2009).
