Brazil Announces Big Emission Cuts

Nov. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- This voluntary emission cuts pledge, made by Brazil, heaps more pressure on developed nations to announce more ambitious carbon reduction targets of their own.

Brazil’s chief of staff, Dilma Rousseff, stated that there would be a 38-40% cut in carbon emissions by 2020. The largest contributor to the emission cuts will be an 80% reduction in deforestation. Ms Rousseff went on to say that "what Brazil is doing is a political gesture", the Brazilian Government still believe that it is the responsibility of the developed nations to make the biggest emission cuts, with binding targets.

Scientists agree with Dilma Rousseff saying that rich nations with long polluting histories need to cut emissions by 25-40% by 2020 on 1990 levels.  Concrete targets for these emissions cuts have not been forthcoming however, due to breakdowns in negotiations.  Experts also think that poorer developing nations need to cut their emissions by 15-30% by 2020 compared to business-as-usual.

However, the Brazilian government should really take on concrete emission targets, to ensure the carbon cuts actually materialise”.
