Santa Barbara, California – Continental Wind Power, Inc., of Santa Barbara, California, announced today that it has executed a partnership agreement with DRS Power & Control Technologies, Inc., located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the development of power conversion, monitoring, and control equipment designed for the conversion of natural wind power to electricity. DRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Finmeccanica S.p.A., a 24 billion dollar company, employing more than 70,000 people worldwide. Through this partnership they will bring more pollution-free, inexhaustible energy to the world. Leveraging over 100 years of electrical power controls and engineering technology, DRS' design center and manufacturing plant will produce commercial grade wind power converters for Continental Wind Power. Continental Wind, a fast growing company in the field of wind turbine design, manufacturing and wind farm development, is working with other partners to bring these turn-key, modern 300 to 900 kilowatt medium-sized wind turbines to the U.S. and international markets.
Continental Wind Power develops wind turbines for customers including schools, cities, counties, farms, factories, and small communities enabling them to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and stabilize their energy costs. Continental Wind Power president Jim Winsayer said, “We wanted to partner with DRS because their dependable liquid-cooled power converters have proven their ability to withstand the harsh environments, vibrations, and temperatures that wind turbines face. These medium-sized wind turbines will be extremely reliable and highly efficient, and will operate in much smaller installations compared to the larger wind turbines made by most other turbine manufacturers today.” DRS technologies spent more than one year examining Continental Wind Power's technology, analyzing the medium-size wind turbine market and meeting with their team of experienced wind turbine engineers, before making the decision to begin a partnership. As part of the agreement, DRS will invest more than $1,000,000 into Continental Wind.
“Reliable equipment means lower maintenance costs and less down time resulting in a higher overall value to our customers. My employees and I are excited about working with Continental Wind Power to enter the renewable energy market and helping towns and communities reduce emissions and decrease reliance on burning fossil fuel to generate electricity,”
Work has begun and the first delivery of DRS converters will happen this year. DRS is designing and prototyping their power conversion technology for Continental's Wind Turbines. “DRS has a long and proud history of providing effective and reliable power conversion equipment to the U.S. Navy for use on surface ships and nuclear submarines. Submarine power conversion equipment requires dense packaging, must be dependable enough to support 30-year life cycles, and produce clean power for sensitive electronic equipment,” said Alan Perlstein. “Wind Power equipment requires the same quality standards that DRS is known for.” DRS' sustainable products, such as environmental control systems, power generators, water and fuel distribution systems, and heavy equipment transport systems, are used to support military forces, humanitarian efforts, and peacekeeping.
Continental Wind Power will begin production of their wind turbines in 2010 that are slated for installation at wind farms at the end of 2010 and into 2011 and beyond. DRS Power & Control Technologies is designing 500 kilowatt power converters that are “stackable”
“The partnership with Continental Wind allows DRS to expand into the wind industry by creating innovative systems for wind power that are proven to work in harsh conditions,”
