Has The Recession Made You Redundant?

Employment lawyer Phillip Harding, Director of a partner company in Tallents Solicitors in Newark, comments on a new annual report issued by Acas, the employment relations service.

“The report makes worrying reading as it highlights the severe effect that the recession has had on the employment landscape and shows increased tension between employees and employers.

“The Acas report states that the recession has stimulated a 22% rise in unfair dismissal conciliation cases and the demand for redundancy advice has soared by almost three quarters. The rise in unfair dismissal claims is particularly striking as claims had fallen over the previous two years. ”

The report also shows that there has been a substantial increase in the number of redundancy pay claims (up 36%). Acas have also said that their helpline is currently handling between 10,000 and 15,000 calls a week and opening hours had to be extended into the evenings an Saturday mornings to cope with the demand.

Phillip continues,

“These findings are borne out by our own recent experiences and we have seen a marked increase in employment and redundancy related enquiries. In a climate where employees are finding it increasingly difficult to find a new job, it is more likely that they will wish to consider challenging a dismissal and seek compensation.

“If you feel you have been unfairly treated then we would urge you to contact a solicitor to assess the options available to you.

“Legal action may not always be the most appropriate way to resolve a situation but an experienced employment lawyer will advice you correctly and help stop you making a decision you might later regret in your career.”
