The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dongguan Municipal Government on 12 November 2009. Both parties will set up a working group and conduct feasibility study relating to the areas of education, research and training.
The MoU was signed by PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong and Dongguan Mayor Mr Li Yuchuan at the Dongguan City Main Administrative Centre. Prof. Tong also led a senior delegation to attend the signing ceremony. Delegates included PolyU Court Chairman Dr Roy Chung, Deputy Council Chairman Dr Ng Tat-lun, Council Member Mr Ng Wai-hung, and Associate Vice President and Dean of Faculty of Engineering Prof. Alex Wai. On Dongguan side, eleven senior officials including Vice Mayor Mr Wu Daowen and Deputy Secretary-General Mr Zhu Yimin also attended the ceremony.
Prof. Tong said that the implementation of the State Council's Development and Reform Outline for the Pearl River Delta (PRD) Region provides an excellent opportunity for further collaboration between PolyU and Dongguan. He said the collaborative institution in concept would focus on senior executive training at the initial stage. PolyU will also expedite technology transfer for enterprises in Dongguan and introduce its innovations and cutting-edge technology to the city.
"The collaborative institution in concept would not only facilitate further development of PolyU on the Chinese mainland, but also help improve the quality of professional manpower and hone their skills, and in so doing attracting foreign investment and strengthening the competitive edge of enterprises. These are the common goals of our collaboration,"
PolyU has a strong tie to Dongguan city. Many PolyU alumni and friends and partners are also doing businesses in the city. In addition, the electric vehicle mycar jointly developed by the University and EuAuto Technology Limited has its production line in Dongguan.
PolyU has already established five teaching outposts in Hangzhou, Xi'an, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Wuhan. With a total of 17 programmes approved by the State Council's Academic Degrees Committee, PolyU now offers the largest number of state-accredited Mainland programmes among all the universities in Hong Kong and overseas.
