Follow on Google News | North Myrtle Beach Celebrates Holiday Tradition: Arrival of the SnowbirdsColder weather means more northerners are flocking south to escape the winter.
By: Bon's Eye Marketing However, there’s another group of vacationers that loyally returns to the coastal community year after year – just under much cooler conditions. Some call them “Snowbirds.” “We definitely see a noticeable spike in visitors this time of year,” said Nancy Seddinger, owner of Grand Strand Vacations. “This area has really become synonymous with great holiday shopping and perfect coastal weather. So many people have turned it into a tradition.” Currently, businesses in the area are ramping up discounts and specials to accommodate this late-season rush. Dozens of award-winning golf courses – designed by famed architects such as Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Pet Dye, Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Fazio – have drastically lowered rates. With restaurants rolling out seasonal dishes, major price drops in rentals, and theaters opening the curtains on performances like Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Christmas Dinner and Show as well as Alabama Theater’s Christmas Show; many North Myrtle locals expect 2009 to close with a wave of tourists. “It’s just getting started around here,” Seddinger said. “The holidays really bring something special to this area. Where else can you see festive Broadway productions, watch a Christmas parade of decorated boats on the water (North Myrtle Beach Flotilla), and stroll along the beach in the same day? The great shopping also helps.” Seddinger said her business, Grand Strand Vacations, also plans to play its part in offering late-season visitors a gift of gratitude. The rental company – holding more than 350 coastal homes – currently is running a special for Snowbirds. Arrive any Wednesday night in November or December, stay through the weekend and get Saturday night free. Some places usher in the holidays with snow flakes. North Myrtle prefers falling prices. End
