If you’ve ever heard of Lean Manufacturing, just think what Lean can do for Healthcare. With Speaker Jim Garrick, who received his lean background with FedEx, BRS was able to grasp the concept of Lean Thinking.
So if you’re thinking: why lean, why now, why should I care? Instead think: more value, better effectiveness, and increased productivity. The first innovative thinkers, such as Henry Ford or the Venetian Culture, held lean principals that can still help businesses, (including healthcare) rise from the sinking economy we face today.
BRS had only a slight journey to the presentation in Cookeville however, the journey truly begun after the presentation. Garrick touched on 5 principles of lean thinking, not just for healthcare, but for everyone:
• Define value perceived by customer
• Identify value stream
• Make the process flow
• Pull from the customer
• Head towards perfection
Even though these points appear a bit elusive, they are important steps on the road to lean thinking and doing.
Learning about the 5 Principles to Lean Thinking, put everyone at the edge of their seats. However, discussing the 8 forms of Waste made everyone squirm in their seats. Although many are guilty of one form of waste, all left the presentation pleased and enlightened, with the right tools to incorporate Lean Thinking in his or her organization.
Unfortunately, the secrets cannot be revealed in this press release. So you’re next step is to seek the answers from a BRS attendee or from the speaker himself. Remember, Think Lean, Think BRS!
