The big immigration debate in Australia

Australia's tough line on immigration has so far been very clear, but are they right?

Nov. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- The asylum seekers trying to reach Australia by boat have so far been intercepted, as far as Australia are concerned this is an invasion on a very clear policy on immigration. Kevin Rudd, Australia's PM, has insisted that the country's policy on immigration has not been compromised, a point of view not shared by the opposition and one that seems to have trickled down to the Australian public.

Rudd is now between a tiller and a hard place in relation to the public opinion on this issue, perhaps the irony of which is that just last month the Australian immigration minister, Chris Evans, claimed Australia's biggest illegal immigration problem was overstayers, simply having to good a time to remember to leave.

Government statistics state that the amount of people trying to reach Australia by boat stands at 1700 this year, yet the amount of foreign visitors overstaying their visas stands at 50,000. This is a trend seen not just in Australia, the US recently admitting that half of the illegal immigrants within its borders arrived by air and not in fact the under side of a train.

Paradoxically, according to the Refugee Council in Australia, the people arriving by boat actually have the law on their side. These laws are enshrined into the Australian constitution and are very clear in that if a person is in danger of persecution or otherwise and needs sanctuary they should be granted it.

Refugee laws are there for a very good reason and it seems Australia's opposition party has been extremely quick to paint this issue as an example of the Australian Prime Ministers' inadequacy to the voting public. The contrasting detail that overstayers in the country are a much bigger problem is one handily pushed to the back of the opposing party's discussions. The visual image being played into the Australian publics' minds of invaders on boats, like pirates from a far and barbaric land, come to claim this one as their own, is much more useful for this purpose than young English guys stepping off a plane.
