Many of us are influenced by fashion in terms of our clothing, accessories or make up, but how about our homes? With the current financial climate more of us will opt to spend nights in over the coming months, and a few stylish touches to your home can make it feel far more appealing during the darker winter months. Bring your dwelling up to date with a few simple steps and enjoy the atmosphere you have created, or invite friends over for dinner and drinks during the festive period.
Here are a few ideas and key trends for your home as we head for 2010.
Minimise clutter
The minimal look is bang on trend and step one has got to be de-cluttering!
It doesn’t cost a penny and makes such a difference to your living space and your mood.
Systematically work your way through your home relieving every room of unwanted junk. You may even find that you can make yourself a little cash to add some modern touches later by selling unwanted goods or swapping items with friends. Another positive side-effect is that you will often find items suitable for charity shops; passing them on is helpful and makes you feel good.
Less is more and you will be amazed how much clutter you have accumulated since you moved in. The process is also very liberating and you will often find that you throw emotional baggage out with the rubbish.
For more effective de-cluttering, start with the shed or loft if you have them; you can then move anything from the home that you are unsure about binning into the space you have created in these areas.
Remember, if you haven’t worn, looked at, or used an item for the last couple of years, the chances are you never will, and more to the point, someone else might!
Colour
There will be a move away from magnolia in the coming months and towards more vivid colours in soft palettes.
Don’t be afraid to try some purples, blues and reds in your home: they will instantly brighten it. Try painting a feature wall or some blocks or stripes of colour to add interest to a room.
If you prefer not to go for something permanent, or are on a low budget, simply add a canvas or some coloured throws, bedding, accessories or cushions to brighten up your life in an instant.
High gloss
High gloss is everywhere, from your kitchen to your bedroom – it is a huge look as we leave 2009 behind and start to think about a new year. The look is clean, contemporary and sleek and you will notice a lot of items on the market that are embracing this style right now.
Kitchen cupboards and worktops look fantastic in a high-gloss finish, as does bedroom and living room furniture.
Simple lines and clever lighting can really maximise the effects of this look, so if a new bedroom suite is out of the question try adding some modern lighting or a key item or two.
Dated wooden furniture can look fabulous sanded down and glossed in your choice of colour, and you can have gloss made up to complement the scheme you are going for. To achieve a smooth finish use a roller.
