Criminal charges against an Indianapolis woman accused of raiding cemetery perpetual care trust funds to the tune of $25 million dollars have been dismissed. Indianapolis prosecutors accused Debora Johnson through her affiliation with Memory Gardens Cemetery, Greenwood, Indiana of unlawfully defrauding customers who purchased pre-paid cemetery plots and merchandise. In addition to obtaining the dismissal of all charges against Johnson, Indianapolis criminal attorneys, Robert A. Schembs and Kathleen M. Sweeney, were successful in unfreezing $100,000 in bank and brokerage accounts that were seized from Johnson.
Johnson was also the target of a class action civil lawsuit seeking recovery of the trust funds. Schembs and Sweeney also succeeded in obtaining Johnson’s complete dismissal from that case as well.
