David Louthan, an advocate of social media for musicians
Pennsylvania singer songwriter and producer David Louthan is a prolific advocate of using social media to spread the word about his music worldwide, growing his fan base at a phenomenal speed using MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, R&R World and Ubetoo.com to name just a few.
By cleverly growing his fan base at all the top social music networks, David is collectively connecting his fans from all corners of the social media world. Every fan has their favoured social network, so picking a handful of the top music sites to have a presence on is an essential strategy to maximise his musical reach.
Although it takes a lot of ongoing effort to manage for an independent artist, the success of David Louthan’s online promotion strategy is all the more impressive as he only purchased a computer and plugged it into the internet 11 months ago.
With an average of 1200 plays for all of his tracks over the last four months, the first social network David used for music promotion was the stalwart MySpace.
“I started promoting my music on MySpace on July 4th 2009, which of course is Independence Day, so that’s quite fitting. I still favour MySpace to promote my music as it’s obviously the most established network out there, and I have spent a lot of time making the site look good. I think it’s very important that you have a good looking social network site, it’s your online calling card, so you have to make it look as good as you can to support your musical brand, it’s expected by the fans. Facebook comes a close second to MySpace for me now, as it’s developing its appeal to musicians every day”
David also thinks that other social networks have their place for the indie artists though.
“One of the biggest opportunities for independent musicians using social networks is the free streaming of your music. It really puts it up front, which is one of the most important things an artist can do on the web; bring the music to centre stage. I think that I have a little way to go with Twitter yet, but with the new Twitter streaming applications coming out right now, such as TweetMySong, I’m confident that I can transfer my social media music campaigns to Twitter quite easily.”
Traditional networking is also part of David Louthan’s strategy too, with careful use of forums. “I recently got picked up for airplay on the Ultimate Guitar internet radio station thanks to my presence at their forums. They have my song ‘Just A Kid’ in regular rotation right now”
It seems that as fast as the social media revolution expands, David Louthan will continue to use the platforms with great effect to promote his music, serving as a role model for online independent musicians worldwide.
