Financial Soultions: Islands threatened by delay in climate treaty.

It may already be too late for some islands as Copenhagen seems ever more unlikely to deliver.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Nov 08, 2009 – Financial Soultions has learned that island nations are getting increasingly concerned about the effects of climate change with factors such as rising seas and contaminated water, threatening islanders from Fiji to Jamaica.

During the last days of the final round of climate talks preceding Copenhagen in December, Dessima Williams, representative of 43 island nations, and an envoy from Grenada said that stronger hurricanes in the Caribbean, the destruction of coral reefs in tourist resorts and desertification in Cape Verde are impacts of climate change that are set to dramatically worsen the longer the globe is unsuccessful in committing to a binding pact on greenhouse gas regulation.

“A delay for us spells danger because we already have very, very detrimental impacts from climate change on our small island states, we are postponing the response to something that is already threatening us,” Financial Soultions understands she was quoted as saying.

Any chance of a treaty being reached this year in Copenhagen have faded substantially in recent weeks with the U.S failing to pass domestic climate change legislation and ongoing arguments between developed and poorer nations around financial aid for developing countries to fight the effects of climate change, Yvo de Boer of the UN even going so far as to say that even after 2 years of talks it may yet take another year to arrive at a legally binding agreement.

The aim of the two year long process was  to regulate the emissions of the 37 industrialized nations currently signatories of the Kyoto Protocol as well as finding targets for the U.S which backed out of the 1997 treaty.

Prominent environmental groups, including Greenpeace have appealed for heads of state to attend Copenhagen in a bid to drive the process, Financial Soultions has learned.
