Scotland is the home of a great deal of good ideas, where models of social and economic innovation have been pioneered throughout its history.
Learning how to make the most of social capital and assets can generate massive ‘real’ economy wealth, reducing the dependency on money and financial investment, is important today more than ever - we need to maximise the value of all available resources.
TEDx Edinburgh, the first of this kind to be held in Scotland, aims to identify significant (however small) contemporary examples of such innovative models, and hopes to trigger further cohesion around local communities interested in open innovation and change.
The programme will consist of a mixture of videos from TED.com and short talks from local speakers including :
• David Erdal, an Oxford graduate who earned his doctorate in the Psychology of Sharing, and in 2008 published the book by Penguin entitled Local Heroes, about the . employee buyout of Loch Fyne Oysters.
• Seb Jouan, Sound Engineer from Arup, will talk about sound and ‘auralization’
• Eva Schonveld, Transition Edinburgh will talk about the Transition model, which aims to help communities respond to the challenges of climate change and soaring energy costs, while creating higher quality of life
• Edward Hibbert will talk about how "Don't throw it away, give it away" is a simple, brilliant idea behind freecycle and freegle
