Insane or desperate? Friends worried for D.L. Shiloh

Friends thought this American-born writer was insane or desperate to give away copies of his satire "Pookoo." But suddenly the once-upon-a-time shot putter and discus thrower started building a worldwide audience. He now has readers in 15 countries.

ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, USA - When D.L. Shiloh first told friends he was going to offer his novel "Pookoo" for free (yes, free) on his web site, they were aghast - and thought he was crazy. Add that it took 17 years for him to forge "Pookoo", a quirky novel about sports and celebrity culture, one had to wonder what the rewards were for all those years of early mornings and late nights.

"I think they were worried that it came off like I was giving away a 10% coupon for dollar hamburgers," Shiloh cracked. "That's the last thing from my mind."

Now after one year or so, "Pookoo" has reached close to 2,000 readers in 15 countries. The story is about an Olympic athlete and how life is after losing gold at the Olympic Games and becomes a celebrity all over again. People are asking if there will be a sequel or a trilogy.

With Shiloh's plan for worldwide distribution revving up and taking off, he knows that those readers will expect something again. The plan is to tell compelling stories that have quirkiness, humor and a meaning of life aspect to them. In other words, continue with what "Pookoo" promised.

SHILOH STARTS LITERACY BENEFIT ON FACEBOOK

Recently, Shiloh started a literacy donation program for a Chicago literacy program through his Facebook page (http://apps.facebook.com/causes/393079/45833615?m=7f359208). He urges readers to save the $10 and give to the cause. But in return, you can download the PDF of "Pookoo" for free off http://www.dlshiloh.com.

"My grandparents had to work at a very young age and my grandfather couldn't read more than headlines," Shiloh reveals. "It stuns me that wouldn't have been able to read my novels."

So Shiloh began the "Lenny the Lobster's Pookoo Improve Adult Literacy Group" on Facebook, which will benefit a Chicago literacy group.
