The Crown of Renown is a historical novel with a military background, set in the final stages of the Honourable East India Company’s existence. It aims to show how Nepal’s hill men adapted to military conditions, personal calamities and unpredictable circumstances, mostly with resilient stoicism and unquestionable prowess. The period covered sees military action at Bharatpur, Afghanistan, the Punjab, Delhi and North India. Civilian activities, such as a Gurkha bodyguard on a trade mission, and a slave boy who becomes a decorated officer, are also woven into the story. It shows what life was like in the Nepal hills during that period and how unworthy British behaviour fostered the poison that led to the 'Indian Mutiny'.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Cross has lived with the Nepalese for virtually all his adult life, from 1944. He is bilingual in Nepali, in which he has a Tribhuwan University BA (Hon), and has walked more than ten thousand miles in the country. He has probably got closer to the Nepalis than any other non-native has. He can count those he knows, and is known by, in the tens of thousands. He now lives permanently in Nepal with his surrogate family who, because he has very limited sight, are also his eyes. In the hills people say he was a Nepali in a previous incarnation and that he and his elder surrogate son were of the same womb – and will be in their next incarnation. Some of his twelve books have been republished in UK, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore and USA.
