FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 07, 2009 -
Helena, Montana MT - The unclaimed money pile had reached almost $21 million in the state of Montana at last estimate. This is hardly surprising for those who are following the trail and volume of unclaimed money and property across the country. Montana is a custodial state and holds unclaimed property on behalf of the owners.

The uncashed money pile in Montana can be attributed to the following sources and reasons - uncashed checks, drafts, state warrants, uncashed payroll checks, utility deposits, interest dividends or income, savings and checking accounts, safe deposit box contents, credit balances, customer overpayments, gift certificates, unidentified remittances, stocks, bonds and uncashed coupons.

The dormancy periods for most types of assets range from 1 to 5 years, but can be longer in certain cases. Montana law concerning the unclaimed property, also called Montana escheatment, requires that the businesses report the possession of any unclaimed property to the Department of Revenue.

The Montana Department of Revenue handles the state’s unclaimed property which includes such items as uncashed checks, state refunds, uncashed payroll checks, utility deposits, interest or dividend income, savings and checking accounts, safe-deposit box contents, credit balances, customer overpayments, gift certificates, unidentified remittances and stocks and bonds.

By law, the Montana Department of Revenue must publish notice of abandoned property (except information concerning traveler's checks, money orders, or similar instruments) valued at $50 or more by November 30 of the year following the year in which the abandoned property has been paid or delivered to the Department in a newspaper of general circulation in the county in Montana in which the last-known address of any person named in the notice is located.
