Resource efficiency measures can save business up to £6.4bn a year, according to research undertaken by the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The research was launched alongside a new campaign from Defra called “Saving money – it's your business”, that aims to help businesses save money providing managers with best practice and advice to cut costs through resource efficiency measures.
The research argues that resource efficiency measures designed to extend the life of products, promote recycling and ensure energy and raw materials are used efficiently could deliver up to a tenth of the UK's short-term carbon emission reductions, saving 254 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 10 years at no net cost to the economy.
Low-cost resource efficiency measures offer cost-savings for businesses
A YouGov poll of FTSE 350 companies shows that almost 50% of businesses recognise cost savings of more than £100,000 a year through low-cost resource efficiency measures. While almost two thirds said they had promoted environmental initiatives in the past year to save money and improve resource efficiency.
Ifti Akbar, co-Managing Director at Envido, said, “This research has an important message in the run-up to Copenhagen. It shows that resource efficiency could prove an invaluable way for businesses to improve their business and environmental performance."
